Photographer's Note

Another shot of the incredible sunset I witnessed from the top of Gokyo Ri (5350m) in the Khumbu Himalaya, Nepal. On the climb up we were surrounded by thick cloud and didn't expect to see any of the view. Just as we arrived at the summit the cloud drifted into the valley below and are efforts were rewarded with the most spectacular views of some of the highest peaks on our planet. Cho Oyu (8201m) the sixth highest, Makalu (8463m) fifth highest, Lhotse (8516m) fourth highest and of course Everest (8853m).

There are 14 peaks over the 8000m mark. The next tallest peak is 7952m high, the little climbed Gyachung Kang and is the peak on the left hand side of this picture.
