Porters often carry "necessities" for trekkers and mountain climbers up and down the mountains. Marpha is on the salt route to Tibet or India. For over two thousand years, humans and animals have treaded this road to bring "necessites" to other civilizations. Every Oct., thousands and thousands of goats and sheep leave the mountains for "civilization", and someone's dinner plate for the largest festival in Nepal, Dasain. I lived here for over a month in 1996, with Moorpark College from Moorpark California, USA, to study Anthropology, culture. By 10am every day of the year, a 50 mile an hour wind blows till at least 5pm, sometimes all night. It is a 5 day treacherous (by western standards)walk to the road to Pokara, and "modern life".
