Photographer's Note

City of Kronstadt was founded in 1703 by order of Peter I, and till its beginning it was a fortress, standing on the island in Finnish Gulf, its meaning to protect Saint-Petersburg from the sea. Soon after the founding building of forts started, to make them, 17 artificial islands were created. Soon Kronstadt become the strongest sea fortress in the world. 19 forts of Kronstadt fortress, with hundreds of guns, at least once stopped the foreign invasion, when English and French fleet, more than 100 ships, approached Saint-Petersburg during Crimean War. During the WWII Kronstadt had 1000 anti-aircraft guns, as well as hundreds of common guns, and helped a lot in protecting Saint-Petersburg during the Siege.
Now forts are forsaken, some of them start to be converted into the museums. On the photo is former battery of Fort Konstantin.
