Photographer's Note

Chernozemelskiy District in the Republic of Kalmikiya is its biggest rural district (18,7 % of the republics territory). The name Chernozemelskiy is from Chernie Zemli that means Black Lands. These lands have such name because of absence of solid blanket of snow there in winters and due to the color of wild wormwood, which grows there in plenty. In the picture you see bushes of tamarisk.

The 91-kilomiter part of my travel (from Velichaevskoe in Stavropol Kray to the administrative center of Chernozemelskiy District, Komsomolskiy) through the Black Lands was very difficult for me because there was no asphalt pavement on that road. Another trouble was a sand-storm, when I could see nothing in the distance more than 20 m. But artesian wells and the oasis-like settlement of Prikumskiy were big bonuses for me there.

Who would have known there is actually a desert in one of the coldest countries on Earth, at least one where was once heard to be the harshest environments to be imprisoned.
You did well to capture the environment, or to the lack of life.

wow,it´s like a Sahara anywhere in the middle of Russia.Who would thought?I love this kind of landscapes.The scene is well composed and framed.It has excellently controlled light,nice,well-saturated colors and good contrast.Beautiful scene.The place seems to be so quiet without people.Just you and this stunning nature.

nice the view of this deserted part of the black lands of Komsomolskiy that reminds me more a dune of Morroco than Russia.The bushes that grow up are interesting as the wild wormwood that we can see in wikipedia.

I never expected to see a desert, here!
The light reveals the ripples and dunes of the sand, producing a pleasing sense of texture.

I did not expect a real sandy desert in Russia.
Very interesting document. I like the composition with some vegetation making a nice foreground. The pattern on the sand seems well preserved, untouched by human presence.
