this photograph was taken on a sunny day in seoul. the statue is a memorial statue and it's quite unique. the statue is representative of 33 men and women who lead the independence movement against japan in 1919.

during japan's rule of korea, these demonstrators brought korean independence to the attention of their japanese rulers and other foreigners living in seoul.

that day, as a result of the demonstrations, a lot of koreans were killed by japanese soldiers and police.

there's a legend of a young girl, named Yoo Gwan Soon, involved in the demonstration. her entire family was killed during the demonstration, but she was captured by police and taken to jail. during her incarceration she continued to fight the japanese, despite being beaten and tortured. her name is famous amongst korean people for her rebellion against japanese domination of korea.

this is such a simple photograph of a simple statue ... but the story beind it is not simple.

i really love this shot. looking through my gallery it's not surprising to find other shots like it. simple photograph with complex meaning.
