Photographer's Note
Weligama is a small village on the southern coast between Galle and Matara where the Stilt Fisherman can be found. They sit patiently on sticks driven into the seabed. Our visit because of the distance from our hotel at Bentota was in the early afternoon, not an ideal time as the light was very strong. It was made even brighter by the reflection from the white surf. Getting detail in the faces of the fishermen when taking close ups was extremely difficult and a some of the pictures taken here were not very good. However it records a scene that you are probably not likely to visit again.

very nice composition with this fisherman on the right, the piece pof trees, and the living sea behind. And also the action, concentration of this man on the fish. Lights are great against the sun a little. And fabulous contrast between strong sea and quiet man... great job Colin, great !

I find this picture really remarkable. First the subject is quite unusual, at least to me — never heard of this way of fishing before. The composition places emphasis on the fisherman, with the peculiar position of his arm from which you guess, rather than see, the existence of the thread, but you also feel the powerful presence of the sea in the background. Finally, despite the difficult light conditions that you mention, the colors are beautiful.

a very nice image Colin.. Like tit a lot.. I was one time staying not far from Weligama, but didn't go there. I especially like the way you have this guy with the bright blue turban..and the waves as a backfround.
A really nice catch..

The composition is fabulous and describes the scene well. I don't think having a lot of detail in the man's face is that important in this image because his silouette alomst becomes a vertical graphic element , along with the sticks against the horizontal waves.

Wonderfull shot Colin. The subject is very interesting and original. You managed to get amazing sharpness and colors in your photo. The breaking waves in the back are also superb. Bravo.

You never cease to surprise me with your wide and qualitative variation of photos Colin. This photo is very nice, I like the static posture of the fisherman agains the almost furious motion of the waves, it creates a very nice contrast between the man and the nature. Well composed, great light and colours. Well done!

What strucks me with this pic is the size of the wave .. just imagine that if this fisherman is not scared of such a big wave, how big was this tsunami wave to make so much damage. Nice details of this fisherman and the fish he just caught.. I also like the details of his hair dress.

A great, great image! Especially for me who have never visited this country. I now can perfectly imagine how it looked before, as some colourful and warm "Paradise", and how it looks now, hurt, devasted!
The sea gives and the sea takes... Thank you for sharing.

I hadn't seen this photo of yours Colin, how amazing it is! I can't imagine what would make one think to sit on a "stick" all day looking for fish, so interesting.
Even with the conditions you've captured him well, fishing pole outstretched, and the colorful clothing accented with the powerful waves. So sad that they turned so deadly, I hope this fishing tradition will continue.

Because of your photo, I created a theme to collect pictures of this type of fishing.
Thank you for giving me something new to learn, one more favorite photo, and a wonderful art-work to open the theme.

Amazing photo - balance is the word that comes to mind - both literally and in a deeper perspective. Wonderful harmony of colors.

I realized Colin, that although this was one of the images I felt most strongly should be included in the calendar being created for TE, I haven't given it a critique as yet. I like it so much that I would love to see it on the cover of the calendar.
The colors are so sumputuous with the man's clothes and turban so beautiful against the sky and breaking surf. The man is intent upon his task, eyes peering toward the water with his left arm extended, fingers delicately curled. I note the watch that brings this timeless image into the modern age. Details are finely rendered as well. This definitely has to join my list of favorites. Great work you've done here.

Hello Colin,
I discover this one in your gqllery, such a beautiful catch, we can feel the power of those waves and the wind make me swing. It's a strange way for fishing, you have very well portrayed this guy, nice framing and image quality.
Well done

Very nice photo. I visit the same place back in 1986. I don't understand how they can sit there for hours. Would like to see more contrast in the sea, but otherwise a nice shot.
