060 / Sunset in Khao Lak

Set along Thailand's Andaman coast, Khao Lak is a serene and silent coastal town, that presents an attractive alternative to the bustling shores of Phuket less than two hours away. The surrounding area was Thailand's worst hit during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, with over 4,000 locals and visiting tourists losing their lives in the disaster. Today, there is little left on the ground to betray a hint of the tragedy - the beaches are as beautiful and the sunsets as spectacular as ever. The only reminders are signs for evacuation routes, and a museum-memorial complex. Walking along its stunning and soothing beaches, its hard to imagine that this very place could hold such fury within it.
