Kaylan Square 1, a photo from Bukhara, West

Kaylan Square is possibly the most visited sight in Bukhara, at least it is where we saw the most tourists.
It is a huge mosque/madrasa complex with the main photo showing the facade of the main mosque area.
Back in around 1121 a large mosque and minaret were built, however, in Genghis Khan's siege and sacking of Bukhara in 1220 the mosque was demolished and the only significant old structure knowingly left by Genghis Khan was the monumental minaret (see WS). He left that so that it could be used as a watch tower to keep an eye over the rest of Bukhara.
Also in the WS is a rather stark flanking wall in the mosque courtyard.

Wow this is an amazing piece of architecture. I love the colors and unique style.
The blue sky adds a nice touch and the turquoise towers looks so interesting against the sky.
Brilliant symmetrical composition.
This is a place which I would really like to visit someday.

The main photo has a stunning symmetry, but WS #2 appeals more to me because of the minaret and the tree. All photos are superbly sharp and well exposed.

the iwans are similar the persian style, but the minaret in the WS is marvelous and special in style. very beautiful monument of architecture. TFS.

Hello Ian,
The minarets in Uzbekistan usually have a very sturdy size. I'm not sure if this is unique in the Islamic world but it seems so to me.
