Hello friends and colleagues, today I offer a view of the city center of Salzburg with the castle in the background, I hope you like, then some letters about the city.

Salzburg (in German: Salzburg About this sound / zalt͡sbʊɐ̯k / (? ˇ I), 'city / castle') is the fourth most populous city in Austria with 150,269 inhabitants (2012), capital of the federal state (Bundesland) of Salzburg and the homonymous region, one of the nine in which this country is divided. Its name comes from the barges that carried salt in century VIII and that they had to pay a tax, use very common in many rivers of Europe.

Salzburg is 150 km east of Munich, Germany, and 300 km west of Vienna. The town extends on both banks of the river Salzach, 25 km from the northern foothills of the Alps. The southern mountainous character of the Salzburg region contrasts with the gentle undulations of its northern part. The nearest alpine summit is the Untersberg (1,853 m), which is located only a few kilometers southwest of the city. The center of the city is surrounded by two rocky elevations, the Mönchsberg and the Kapuzinerberg, whose forests constitute the green lung of the city.

Traces of establishments dating back to very ancient times have been found. Particularly on the Rainberg hill there are indications of a continued occupation from the Neolithic period to the Roman conquest in the time of Emperor Augustus. On the hill of the castle and on the Kapuzinerberg have been discovered remains of fortifications of what in the Iron Age was in all probability the most important center of the Celtic people of the ambisontii.

The Romans grouped the small agricultural communities in a single city, Juvavum, in the year 15 a. C. It is probable that the name does not come from a Roman divinity, but was the adaptation of a previous Celtic name (Ivavavo). The city became municipium in 45 AD under Emperor Claudius (Municipium Claudium Juvavum), becoming one of the most important in the province of Noricum. The decline of Juvavum after the collapse of the Noricum frontier was very rapid, so that in the seventh century it was in a practically ruinous state.

Towards the year 700 San Ruperto founded a new population in the site of the old Roman Iuvavum, in its search to establish a basilica, and in 739 converted the population to a bishopric and in 798, Arno, in the seat of an archbishopric .

Salzburg was ruled by a Prince-Archbishop until the early nineteenth century. His last Prince-Archbishop was Hieronymus von Colloredo.

Despite the clouds aloft, managed a fine view over the waterfront facades and the castle uphill's.
This town offers many architecture's jewels, and a nice colorful photographic subjects. Interesting note about.

It's an impressive and attractive photo with a good view of the city and its elegant buildings, but where the clouds are almost as eye-catching. I like the subdued colours of the cloudy day, which may have brought rain and thunder.

Hello Angel,
I remember this view of Salzburg old town from the other side of the river. The low light engenders a particular atmosphere that is very apt to the subject. Very good colours and excellent sharpness.

Hello Angel,
I've visited Salzurg only once, 35 years ago. I don't remember I've taken pictures near the riverside like this one. But I do remember that Salzburg is a very romantic city.
Your photograph shows the town on different levels: there are the buildings along the waterfront. Behind them we see different domes and towers rising up. And on the top of the hill the castle dominates the whole city.
You did not have the best light that day but the photo is still clear enough.

Sensacional esta panoramica de la ciudad, con el rio en primer plano y la linea de fachadas junto al mismo, con las torres de la catedral y demas iglesias, mientras en la cima de la colina disfrutamos con la impresionante fortaleza-palacio. A pesar de las nubes un bonito cielo.
Un magnifico colorido que da mucha riqueza cromatica a la imagen.
Muy buena gestion de la iluminación y muy buena nitidez.

Hola Angel,

You have captured the fine array of buildings along the waterfront and revealed how the city climbs from the river to the hilltop, where the castle dominates.
It's a fine, angled shot, creating a natural guide.
The sky is a fine addition, giving a moody appearance overall.

really like the fortress up top like that, and with the dome on the right, and the rectangular long buildings spread across the bottom.. sweet scene for sure, and the diffused light is very attractive. cheers
