Photographer's Note

A partial view of the Altstadt (Old City) from the hilltop Hohensalzburg Fortress in Salzburg, reached by cablecar. At left in the fg is the spire of the Franciscan Church (Franziskanerkirche) dating from 1498 AD. There are 27 churches in the city, a few of which can be seen across the Salzach River. Salzburg literally means "Salt Fortress" and the town became wealthy on the back of its salt / gold mines, with salt being expensive far from the sea. The city had a population of 154,000 in 2018. The German word 'Burg' is related to English 'Burrough' or 'burgh' which also generally means a walled, independent city eg Edinburgh. But it can also mean just an independent city, such as Pittsburgh.

Hello Chris,
A great bird's eye view of the roofs of Salzburg. The river is well placed in the centre and the church very nicely and prominently in the foreground. Well done.

Chris, the hilltop offers a deep visual field. The church spire stands out from Salzbourg other buildings. The roofs are mainly grey, the wide river snakes in the middle of the city. Fine colors, good sharpness, instructive photo note, regards.

It's "-borg" in Swedish. ;-)
Nice view of the city. I think I have been on the same hill. The church dominates the view but I also like the many roofs and the bend of the river with lawns on both sides. These features give the photo a fine structure.

Very nice birdseye view of Salzburg. Most probably "the city" throughout Europe with many architectorial masterworks and many topclass evidences of the Austrian cultural heritage. Good and usefull notes.

Hello Chris, an excellent high viewpoint so that we get a great view of the river and the bridges. No high rise buildings here, maybe elsewhere in the city, but their absence adds to the charm of this picture. Very sharp quality.

This elegant city has many corners of interest, so I learnt from photos on TE.
Fine clear view along the roof-tops and to the length of the river as it curves on the far side.

Hello Chris,

It is really interesting when we see a city from such an elevated position; we begin to understand the regularity of the streets and how they are linked to the all important river.
Your photograph is very well composed with strength from the tower and the river as a separation line. Very good sense of depth.

It was Alfred the Great who first introduced 'burghs, in an attempt to strengthen the towns against the Vikings!

Hi Chris,
I remember being on top of the hill. Sadly I don't think I have any photos from that trip. This is such a photogenic town.
Here the church adds a nice focal point and I like also the turn of the river which as in the high mountain regions has the green color.
In spite of the cloudy weather the effect is so eye catching,

Hello Chris,
Not a typical panorama of Salzburg with the castle in the background but also very pretty. I traveled by train twice but I was not able to stay longer in this lovely city known from the movie Sound of Music.
The river made perfect diagonal composition and the quality of the photo is superb.

a nice upper view from the castle. I visited this town with my family in only one day, not so much options with the family. I would like to know the city in fact. nice details of the town here.
