Photographer's Note

Vienna has been the capital of Austria for more than a thousand years. It became the cultural centre of the nation and developed its own regional cuisine; as such, Viennese cuisine bears the unique distinction of being the only kind of cooking named after a city.

The variety of ingredients sold on the Naschmarkt might lead to the thought of a broadly varied cooking culture. In fact, dishes heavily depending on meat make up typical Viennese cuisine: Wiener schnitzel (veal coated in breadcrumbs and fried), Tafelspitz (boiled beef), Beuschel (a ragout containing veal lungs and heart), and Selchfleisch (smoked meat) with sauerkraut and dumplings are typical of its cooking.

Some sweet Viennese dishes include Apfelstrudel (strudel pastry filled with apples), Millirahmstrudel (milk-cream strudel), Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes served with fruit compotes), and Sachertorte (cake of two layers of chocolate cake with apricot jam in the middle). These and many other desserts will be on offer at one of the many Konditorei of Vienna, where they are generally eaten with coffee in the afternoon.

Liptauer as a spread, or Powidl also as spread or base for dumplings are also quite popular.

Hello Daniel, I know Wiener schnitzel and Apfelstrudel. They are good. And also the sausages. attractive composition with so many lovely details in small area. Excellent picture.

Hello Daniel,
I like Wiener schnitzel, but it is very difficult to get a decent one in France. This small street has much to offer in the way of architectural features. The people nicely animate the scene and contribute to the mood. Very good technical realisation.

I always like your compositions, this is another one.
this is pretty cool looking with all the subjects squeezed into the vertical frame. its a mix mash of so many different things, it makes no sense but also alot of sense. i like it!

An extremely well detailed picture with interesting elements all over the image. Lively and colourful !
I agree about the food.
Yet, I have a very bad memory of a well-known Wiener schnitzel restaurant in the centre. One that is mentioned in the guidebooks, but overpriced, bad quality and louzy and impolite service.
I'm afraid that this happens to all of us one day.

Hello Daniel

The thing I most remember about Austrian food is the high prices, quite outrageous to be paying 30 euro for a modest meal, and 12 euro for a small coffee. Prices in Romania and Hungary are far more reasonable and the food is just as good. Anyway I like the sharpness and perspective here. Tfs!
