Markt is certainly one of the most picturesque spots in Bruges. This is my third photo from this square and it even shows the same side of it again. Even though Markt is beautiful in all directions, the northern side has not only particularly colourful facades but the sun also favourably lights it all day long. I believe, it is quite a different photo from the previous ones. I wouldn’t know who the people in the monument are if not the fact that John has mentioned their names in his recent photo from this square. This allowed me to find an external citation.
In the middle of the square stands the statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, the two popular local heroes who in 1302 played a major role in the Flemish resistance against the French king, with the Battle of the Spurs result. The four corner statues set Bruges, Ypres , Ghent and Kortrijk for. The statue was erected in 1887, the period of historical romanticism.
A while ago I showed a photo which referred to another hero and I remember John’s comment on that photo. This whole discussion about heroes reminded me the popular song by Bonnie Tyler, hence the title. Here are the lyrics of that song:
Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the gods?
Where's the streetwise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and I turn
And I dream of what I need
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero till the end of the night
He's gotta be strong, and he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero till the morning light
He's gotta be sure, and it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life
Larger than life

Hello Mariusz,
A great view of the square, there's so much to see, the wonderful and colourful façades, the elegant tower at right and the statue in the centre. The light was amazing, really bright and the blue sky provided the perfect backdrop. It was remarkably quiet here.

Great & surprisingly sunny shot from Bruges, Mariusz. The two heroes stand tall. Two heroes of Flemish nationalism, reputed to have fought in a famous battle against the French. Actually, in reality only one of them fought there (probably), the other one most certainly didn't. A great example of fake news Middle Ages style. Or is it just romanticism? As you write, people need heroes. And if they don't exist, we'll make them up. :)

Cześć Mariusz
Świetne zdjęcie tego pomnika choć moja uwagę bardziej zwracają tu fasady kolorowych kamienic.
Dobra kompozycja i super jakość ( jak zawsze )

Hello Mariusz,
The statue shows Jan Breydel and Pieter De Coninck, two Flemish heroes who played an important role in the Flemish resistance against the French rule in 1302. Their story is legendary in Flanders.
However, I did not know that as Benny writes that one of them was not present in the big battle. This is how I learn from the comments that fellow countrymen write on TE :)
The shadows of I don't know what fill nicely the foreground of the picture.
Splendid colourful view under the summer sun.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Mariusz,
The flags masts spearing up with a sort of "competition" with the towers and triangle tops of the houses. But, main object, the statue and its marble base immaculately shown, draws first attention, beautifully placed within the frame.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Bonjour Mariusz,
J'aime bien l'effet du cadrage carré . C'est original et sert bien la beauté de cette place. On ignore souvent la statue au centre tellement les maisons sont belles.
Amicalement

100 years ago these heroes had respect and a real name in the history books, nowadays in the political correct world, everybody is a criminal. nice view of these façades and the monument in evidence. you got a special blue day in fact in this region whose weather is like in UK.

Mariusz, Markt represents a meeting point in Bruges, it is also an unmissable square in the city concentrating the activity. The commemorative statue was built in the middle of the square. It is surrounded by elegant buildings. Fine colors, good image quality and excellent light, instructive photo note, regards.

Hello Mariusz,
You had wonderful weather with clear blue skies and lots of sunshine. Most places look better like this than dull cloudy days. Good sharpness and Bruges is still on my bucket list. Tfs!

Hello Mariusz,
It's good to see these places from your lens, too. 👍🏻👍🏻 You had beautiful weather.
Regards,
MT
PS. As for the age of the black streaks in the glacier, Margerie flows at 1.8 m/day and it is 34 km long. If those streaks had been formed right at the origin, it would have taken them 34,000/1.8 = 1888.88 days = ~52 years to reach the terminus. So they can't be older than 52 years. Sorry to disappoint you! 😉
