I took this picture (26.01.2021) this morning, +1°Celsius, a trip of 42 km.

History:

Saint Cornelius Church Aalter centre.

We may assume that Aalter had its first church in the Carolingian period, with Saint Denijs as its patron saint. It is not clear when the Church was consecrated to Saint Cornelius. The oldest traces of the current church go back to the 12th century. As late as 1979, medieval floor tiles were removed during adaptation works. The first expansion took place at the end of the 15th century and a new beech was added around 1540.

The interior of the church, like the church building itself, has a predominantly neo-gothic character. Its patron saint is Saint Cornelius. There are 18th and 19th century tombstones against the north facade. Next to the church, a cruciform monument commemorates the fallen military and civilian victims of the First World War.

I hope you like it
