HISTORY:
In the autumn of 1944, the Canadians liberated the municipalities south of the Leopold Canal in the Battle of the Leopold Canal.
On October 6, the soldiers of the 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division started the construction of a "Bailey bridge" over the Leopold Canal between Maldegem and Sint-Laureins. A few days later, in the first phase of the "Switchback Operation", the Canadians crossed the channel.
The bridge in question is probably one of the last remaining Bailey bridges from the Second World War still in use. Locally it is known as the "Lievebrug".
I hope you like it

Hello John, it is a long time since I last saw a Bailey bridge, this is a very fine example.
You had a good point of view where if we look along the right hand side we can see right to the vanishing point.
The sharp quality is excellent.
The winters trees look great against the sky.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hallo John,
Een mooie foto van deze oude oorlogsbrug, goed geplaatst in het midden van de foto. De rij bomen en de vaart zorgen voor mooie diagonale lijnen eromheen.

Hello John,
This photo is a bit dark, but the darkness certainly creates a rather strange and exciting atmosphere. The long diagonal view of the canal and the trees is true to your trade mark in photography, and so is the perfect sharpness. The special kind of bridge is what makes a difference to many other photos.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello John,
Interesting history, a bridge that was supposed to be temporary is still used today. The place is very beautiful, the narrow road in the middle of the big trees makes it a very interesting place to visit. The charged sky also made its composition even more interesting.

Hi John,
The length of the canal is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the trees and of the bridge. The cloudy sky has a special effect on the colors. Have a nice day.

Hallo John,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hi John
Great mood and atmosphere surrounding this beautiful canal scene with that pedestrian bridge as a main actor of the show - I suppose we can call it a wonderful feat of engineering as it's lasted for so long. It turned out that this particular bailey bridge is one of some historical significance and worthy of admiration in its own right. Nicely shot with good exposure and importantly great info and thanks for taking the time to tell the tale. Congrats
Best regards

Hi John
This is an unusual sight - a Bailey bridge in Belgium. Your explanation explains. A good photo of this bit of wartime history.

Hello John,
That's an interesting piece of history: a bridge from the days of WWII still being used!
You chose a good viewpoint, incorporating the bridge, and a fine sense of perspective created by the double line of winter poplars.
The dark sky creates a sense of drama to this winter scene.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi John,
quite an interesting light and resulting colors.
I wonder whether it was already the evening or rather it was so cloudy that it appeared so dark already.
Great level of detail. Nice spot.
Very well done,

Hi John.
Although the place is the same as in the previous photo, and even the day, the weather conditions seem totally different and everything changes in the image, the colors, the light ... it is as if the previous one represented autumn and this winter, very curious.
Sharpness, lighting, color, and the magnificent composition; they are all perfectly managed factors, in this image.
Well done. I like it.
You have a good day.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Dag John
These health poplars, that compose a beautiful perspective, stand up straight on each side of the canal and could be compared to Canadian soldiers who bravely helped the Netherland's army during WWII.
Many thanks for the nice tribute you paid to Canada in your note.
