Photographer's Note

The old village of Shiroka Laka, in the Rhodope mountains in Southern Bulgaria, was distinguished as a unique settlement with a special contribution to Bulgarian culture. Its architectural appearance has been preserved as it was some 150 years ago. The cobble stone streets wind by old village houses made of stone and wood, offering a trip to the past. The village is also known for its unique folklore style. It is the birthplace of several generations of prominent bagpipe players as well as to graduates of the famous Shiroka Laka Folk Music School. The place has been proclaimed architecture and ethnographic reserve.
