Photographer's Note
I LOVE……YOU / JOHN LENNON
Lennonova zeď – Lennon Wall
There are surprisingly few photos on TrekEarth of the Lennon Wall in Prague.
John Lennon is the source of inspiration for the rich graffiti that has been continuously painted on this wall since 1980. It has become an expression of protest against violence and oppression and for love, peace and freedom.
In 1988 the wall was a source of irritation for the communist regime of Gustáv Husák. After a brief period of democratization and liberalization known as the Prague Spring, the new communist government reversed the reforms.
Young Czechs wrote their displeasure at the loss of freedoms on the wall.
The liberalization movement to which the students belonged was called "Lennonism" (not to be confused with Leninism).
The original portrait of Lennon has since disappeared under several layers of new graffiti, but his portrait is always present.
The wall is still painted with new and varying protests against local or global problems, but also calls for love and peace remain one of the main themes
In April 2019 on Earth Day, the wall was painted over by the Extinction Rebellion activist group with slogans demanding action on climate change.
And in July 2019, artists painted a memorial on the wall to Marco Leung Ling-Kit, the activist at the 2019 Hong Kong demonstration against the extradition bill with China.
Because the wall was regularly worked by drunks and tourists (probably drunk too). That is why the city council decided in 2019 to install surveillance cameras.

Hello Rob,
I like the activity of WS #1, where we see a boyfriend actually taking a photo, but the light is better in this photo and of course there is a lady in red (not to be wasted). There is half a dozen nice ladies in the other WS but no photographer. Among my most important teenage experiences was a concert with the Beatles in 1963, so I would certainly have made sure to see this place if I had been here in recent years. I spent some time in Vilnius to locate a statue (bust) of Frank Zappa, but no particularly interesting photos were possible.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi Rob,
John Lennon is also very popular in Montreal, he did with his wife a kind of love-in at the Queen Elisabeth hotel. The point of view is showing the details of the John Lennon wall and of the young woman waiting to be photograph. The light is making the colors to stand out. Have a nice day.

Hi Rob,in fact I was in Prague for 4 days but I just didn't see it, I was too busy visiting the restaurants .. hehe .. useful post with 3 beautiful photos, original as always, the portrait of Lennon is now flooded with invasive writings which have little to do with the purpose for which this wall was created, a real shame. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hallo Rob,

Hello Rob,
The lady in red steals the show here. But this colourful wall is a stark reminder of the intolerance of the Communist regime. All 3 images are excellent. Good sharpness and framing. Tfs!

Hello Rob,
This is a very colorful and fun shot. I like how the word "love" is written in different languages. The young lady in red seems to be smiling right at you. :-) I hope all is well. Take care!

Hi Rob
Not having been to Prague (it should have been last year!) I am not familiar with the wall but this couple provided you with a good photo opportunity. Well spotted for a timely take.

Hello Rob,
On three photos you managed to combine love with Lennon and the art of graffiti.
Rightly chosen the main post, though each of the WS's is a fine photo.
Good afternoon,

Hello Rob, three excellent shots.
I particularly like the shot with the young women either side of the picture of John Lennon.
The young woman in red seems to be looking at you, which adds to the charm of the picture.
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards, Jean.

Yeh! Yeh Yeh! ... just couldn't resist!
What a fine series of photographs, all very well composed and exposed, perpetuating the message of peace and freedom.
Though the wall is so full of expressive graffiti, it doesn't detract from the figures, who have a good link.
The Beatles still reach people today in programmes following their life, their music, their memorabilia, ...!
This week I watched a programme following their development from schoolboy 'Quarrymen' to topping the charts. They had such a sense of jovial irreverence that was a great hit with teenagers of the time.
Another programme, 'Yesterday' was a fictional take on a person waking from an accident and writing the most wonderful songs (all written by Beatles' members) that were unknown to the public at that time! It sounds strange but I did enjoy it!
They are like Princess Diana, even long after death, they continue to be featured in newspapers and programmes alike.
Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Hallo Rob,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hi Rob
good to see you posting photos, for a while there I was thinking maybe you had left TE for good. Looks like this man's shirt could easily be apart of the wall haha. The WS are exactly what i'd expect, not to sound sexist or anything, but women tend to like having their photos taken in places like this compared to men. I would have to agree, I don't care to have my photo taken here. We were trying to find this Wall in Prague, but we just never got around to it, so i'm interested in seeing it here. cheers

Hi Rob,
It seems I am not the only one who uploads photos of ladies in red outfits :)
Great series of photos. This is a nice addition to your series and due to its size and location it seems it is quite easy to capture some people in front of it, enjoying the art.
Very well seen and captured,
M
