Photographer's Note

The photo shows the Flensburg Fjord, occasionally known as the Flensburg Firth, that in the far north of Germany forms part of the border between Germany to the south and Denmark to the north.

Fortunately, winter was very short this year (but very strong). The ice is melting now and the frost comes out of the earth slowly. The sun gets higher and heats the seaweed and last year’s grass. This was the first smell of spring I noticed when I took this photo. The smell of old things heated and dried has an almost sweet aroma to it. It is nice to use the senses to detect the changes in nature that occur in the spring!

And I remember the children’s song “Winter adé, scheiden tut weh”, written by Hoffmann von Fallersleben; this is the English version:

Goodbye, winter! Parting hurts.
But your parting
Makes my heart laugh.
Goodbye, winter! Parting hurts.

Goodbye, winter! Parting hurts.
I gladly forget thee
You can always be far away.
Goodbye, winter! Parting hurts.
