Photographer's Note
Seascapes take on an austere beauty in the winter months and it is often during this season that the genius of the place is most apparent. Stripped of the softening effect of the foliage and outlined in frost or snow, it becomes easier to see the underlying structures. Take the spit for example; it is a narrow, long stretch of sand – formed like a hook - that extends out to sea. When waves approach the coastline they are carrying material such as sand, shingle, pebbles and boulders. By adding it to the spit it becomes longer and longer.
The photo shows Flensborg Fjord at Sønderhav; the two legendary Ox Islands in the middle of the fjord are clearly visible. There are no harbors on the Danish side of the fjord apart from these idyllic islands.
A couple of friends loosely attached to the Museum’s harbor Flensborg were allowed to rent the bigger of the islands for under 1000 USD a year including a boatyard shed, a pub and one thatched roof living house. It was quite unusual for the Danish community to accept German tenants but it works very well. The four people not only provide provisioning for the Tourists who come to the island every day throughout the year; they also arrange concerts and other events.

Hi Harriet,
A very peaceful and calm scene, apparently no wind at all. All colours are very soft and subdued. The little peninsula with brown sand separates the the ice on one side with the open water on the other. The house across the water is protected by the surrounding trees, waiting for spring to arrive. An evocative picture.
Kind regards
Gunnar

Hallo Harriet. Winter. Grauer Tag. Schneereste. Alles wirkt so trostlos.

Hello Harriet,
This is a fine view towards the idyllic looking islands. The spit splits the view very nicely between the areas of ice and snow on one side and dark, open water on the other. The colours aren't bright at this time of the year, but I find these varieties of brown and grey not less attractive.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hallo Harriet!

Hello Harriet - Your note compliments your subdued observation of the landscape and guides the viewer to your obvious appreciation of the winter landscape. I like the rather austere palette which has the effect of focusing one's eyes on the details of the composition. The sweeping curves of the spit are enhanced by the icy contrast and the sky's reflections although quite subtle add to the moody feel of the scene. Quiet beauty. Warm regards Rosemary

Hello Harriet,
It is not necessary to have a lot of light to make a good photo, as shown your work. Framing done well, creates a pleasant image. A typical winter landscape, a clear picture and deep. Bravo.

Hello Harriet,
It is quite a remarkable photograph, where the water shows signs of movement on the left but is mirror-like on the right.
The brown spit guides from right to left, from front to back, from ripples to smoothness, quite a transformation. Your shot is beautifully compiosed and I particularly like the reflections in the b/g third.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Inspite of the mist and low prevailing light condition, you managed a fabulous view over, Harriet.
Frozen shore on side, and mirror smooth water surface on the other, created a wonderful contrast, while trees on far, gave a "frame" to fine scenery.
Regards,
Ike

Hi dear Harriet
You are right, seascapes can look so austere in the Winter and it certainly does here. Although it's very beautiful. Superb sharpness and depth. The reflections are stupendous and I love the way the snow and ice frame the lake. Wonderful shot, thanks for sharing.
Warmest regards

Hi Harriet,
very interesting. We had some snowy days in North East England and I live not too far from the coast, yet the communication was in those days pretty much disturbed so I could not really peacefully enjoy them photographically.
You picked a really great spot here. This turn makes a lovely foreground. I like the multiple layers of the composition. There seem to be two worlds in here: the frozen one and one not frozen yet...
Very atmospheric shot,
M

It is not funny period, dear Harriet. But the grey could be the chance for expression. Your witness in all conditions is great, and with your signature is the best. Warm regards, freund!
