Photographer's Note

Coastal regions represent a network of human activity situated in what is a transition zone between the sea and the land. Neither wholly land or sea, this unique area shares characteristics of both. Infrastructure is often coastally situated to gain access to boats.
The photo shows Flensborg Fjord at Sřnderhav. As you can see, the shoreline has been hardened by a man made defence structure (rip-rap). Rip-rap, also known as shot rock is rock or other material used to armour shorelines against water or ice erosion. It can be used on any waterway or water containment where there is potential for water erosion. The boulders can however be undermined easily by waves washing away sand and shingle beneath them. They also can be quite ugly, changing the appearance of a coastline. Another unintended side-effect is, that the erosion typically increases around it; since the waves are reflected at the steeper and harder shore, more energy is available elsewhere for erosion and sand transport.

Hello Harriet,
With some experience of TE it's not too hard to identify this photo as one of yours. You have really created a niche of your own with these coastal photos from northern Germany and southern Denmark. The wooden jetty is very pretty and with the perfect reflections it somehow makes me think of Japan or China. The forested island in the distance is very attracxtive too. In spite of the ugliness, which you point out, of the rip-rap shore, the curved line benefts the composition greatly, and so does the fine light and clarity.

Good evening Harriet,
A marvelous sharp image, with extraordinary bright daylight that enhanced the details we see.
The wooden small jetty reflected fabulousely on the calm water surface, and stones on men-made banks are well shown each. Water level are relatively low and there is a small island with trees well seen on far.

Hi Harriet,
A very pleasant and peaceful view on a perfect day with sun and no wind. The shoreline is nicely curving in the composition and the jetty is perfectly placed. I also enjoy your inclusion of a map view. TE has apparently improved this feature now. You can put the "yellow man" at the spot where you took this picture and see the same view. You can also notice that this was at 61, Fjordveien! You can pan around and see what is on the other side of the road.

Hello Harriet,

This is a most attractive scene. The pebbled bank and the blue water create strong contrasts but, still, are full of tranquillity.
The jetty, the focal image in the shot, is strongly placed, doubles with its lovely reflections and makes a great job of linking together the f/g and the m/g.
A very well exposed shot.

un'immagine ben composta e molto piavevole da osservare, la diagonale del pontile interrompe la monotonia del blu di cielo e mare e il suo riflesso ne aumenta l'effetto.
Molto bella anche la curva dotata degli scogli, con il suo colore caldo contrasta molto bene gli altri colori.

There's an elegant simplicity to this shot. Not too many features, but perfectly positioned and framed. I like the fine reflections of the pontoon on the still surface and how you have used the curve of the shore line to gently lead the eye into the image. A very appealing stillness shot that captures the atmosphere of this tranquil place perfectly.

Das ist wieder einmal ein wunderschön "aufgebautes" Bild und die in den Hintergrund laufende Steinschüttung und der Steg erzeugen beide eine unglaubliche Tiefe. Hinzu kommen - wie so oft in Deinen Bildern - diese beeindruckende Weite und eine herrliche Ruhe. Man glaubt garnicht, dass das hier das Meer ist ...
Da bin ich auch schon vorbeigefahren - garnicht weit von "Annies kiosk" ;-)

Beautiful photo of the coast and for once, the light is nice bright and even feels warm :) Love the deep blue and the reflection of the bridge and the curve of hte shoreline adds lot of depth. Love the warm and of the earth tone and the cool of the water.

I love very thin about this photo. The blue tones are pure magic and the main element, the wooden pier provides a wonderful element of interest, as well as demonstrating such stunning reflections. The curve of the coast creates a lovely lead in for the eye, guiding us towards the horizon.

Love the colours calmness and tranquillity of this sea scene.

Liebe Harriet,

es gibt einen alten Song von John Denver. "Some days are diamonds, some days are stones", heißt er wohl - wenn ich mich recht entsinne.

Bezieht man das mal rein auf das Wetter, dann hattest Du an diesem Tag zweifellos einen Diamanten. Kristallklare Luft mit einem - wie so oft in Deinen Bildern - phantastisch weichen Licht.

Langer Rede kurzer Sinn: Das Bild ist toll und der Standort, bzw. die Landschaft, die sich einem von dort aus präsentiert, ist es wert, eine Zeit zu verweilen und den ungetrübten Blick in die Ferne zu genießen.
