Photographer's Note

The variety of weather in our region is brought by different air masses. Six basic types affect the weather of Northern Europe. They can bring anything from tropical warm and humid days to arctic cold depending on the type of air mass. The most severe weather usually occurs when dry-cold continental polar air clashes with warm-humid maritime tropical air.

In most winters, and certainly those in the last 20 years, our winds normally come from the south-west maintaining our relatively mild winters. However, during the last two weeks, a large area of high pressure was causing a 'block' to the westerly winds that tends to keep us that little bit milder. As a result this has allowed very cold Siberian air to move across mainland Europe.

The photo shows the Flensburg Fjord, occasionally known as the Flensburg Firth, that in the far north of Germany forms part of the border between Germany to the south and Denmark to the north. This region is particularly interesting from a cultural-historical point of view. The German-Danish border has been shifted again and again, and it did not reach its final position until 1920.

Hello Harriet,
There is sometimes beauty in the dullness of the northern European winter weather. Although this view is predominantly grey there are lots of nuances drifting from white or near white to various tones of yellow, green and brown. The two large boulders provide a fine foreground and the look across the water to the forested island and the interesting building is very nice. A slight addition of contrast would have been fine too.

So sehr kalt wirkt das gar nicht, verglichen mit gleißend hellem Schnee und knallblauem Himmel, wie wir es hier auf TE in den letzten Wochen öfter sehen konnten. Etwas melancholisch-nordeutsch eben! Wie immer bei Dir, der Text macht die Sache rund.

Hi Harriet,
All colours are very cold and enhancing the winter feeling here. A fine picture with a clear depth that is provided by the foreground stones and the background house. I am sure this view is much more pleasant in summer...

Good Morning Harriet,

Oh, this is so reminiscent of many days in England: a cold snowy ground and a surrounding cold mist.
You have used it though, to produce a very well composed shot which captures the mood of the day and relays it to the viewers.
Good use of the boulders gives f/g interest and sets the scene with the carpet of snow. You have a nice angled approach to the fjord, with the building strongly positioned in the m/g. The grey hues tell the tale of the cold!

Hello Harriet,
The photo transmits the feeling of winter in your region very well. This kind of views are familiar here too in the beginning of winter, but at the end of January - beginning of February sea is here mostly ice covered, expect a few rare exceptionally warm winters. I like the composition and the mood.

Greetings from Espoo, where it has snowed all day heavily. Next week will be a turning point of winter with thawing.

A magnificent composition, which nicely captures the atmosphere in winter, the snow beside the sea, is always a curious image, the mist creates a mysterious touch, with the bottom of that island?.

Hi Harriet,

the winter condition is certainly very well capture, I can feel the bitter cold and it looks like there may be some wind as well judging on the wave. Though the snow kind of also look like white sand beach. Though I would be going out there in my bathing suite :)

Bei uns nichts neues, großes Schnee und Eis auf dem Fluss.

this is exactly the image I got in my mind about the Baltic sea in winter time. There are all the elements: fog, snow, wind, gray tones, and, of course a lot of cold.

Indeed Europe the last 3 weeks was really one snow carpet with very strong frost.
I hope that the springtime comes very quick, I like not the winter temperatures
Grey sky and a little bit fog care for atmosphere.
Colors and composition are very well.

I like very much this composition and its cold and still, foggy atmosphere. The sweet diagonals make the view relaxed and appealing. I also like the consitency of the colours and the sharpness of the foreground against the gradual blurriness of the background. Light management is marvellous and, defying the difficult lighting conditions, the fog, the distance and the brightness of the snow acheives a wonderful result. Well done!

Brrr! Kälter geht's kaum - stimmungsmäßig. Dies wird insbesondere durch das Fehlen fast jeglicher Farbe unterstrichen. Die Felsbrocken hier schaffen eine wunderbare Tiefe im Bild. Nochmals: Brrr!

Just seeing this picture, cold seems to grip me. The dullness of light, the bleakness of the scene, the choppy waters all spell cold & chill. The two boulders in the FG are good focal points & add depth
