Photographer's Note
Sisley and Moret-sur-Loing
Alfred Sisley died on January 29, 1899 in Moret-sur-Loing, of which he had painted, since 1880, so many landscapes.
With him disappeared the only great Impressionist painter who did not meet success in his lifetime, in spite of moral and financial support expressed by art dealers Paul Durand-Ruel and George Petit, and their efforts to have his work exhibited in Paris and abroad.
However, a year after his death, his painting "Flood at Port-Marly" (exposed today at the Musée d'Orsay) reached a high bidding at the Tavernier sale of March 6, 1900, while being sold to Count Isaac de Camondo. The success, which had been denied to Sisley during his life, stuck thus to his name as of the year following his death.
Sisley was exclusively a landscape painter, who, in the line of Corot, and with Monet, best sought and succeeded in expressing the most subtle nuances of nature in Impressionist landscapes.
British by his birth and his nationality, though he lived in France, he is also in the tradition of Constable, Bonington and Turner. If he was subject to the influence of Monet, he moves away from his friend by his will of construction which makes him respect the structure of forms.

Great note to go with a great photo! I would love to live there its so picturesque, the reflections on the water, its not hard to see why a painter such as Sisley liked to paint such landscaprs!

These places never end enchanting. The reason of the choice of Sisley to live in this village is in your beautiful picture. You are a Sisley's son having the same eye to catch the essence of this landscape. The difference? You have a sensor. Amazing autumnal colors and good reflections (a pity there isn't the reflection of roof in water).

Sisley's paintings always draw me like a magnet when I'm visiting museums, so I'm glad to see this fine tribute you made, Philippe. And I think Sisley would have been particularly happy to see what you did with the sunlight here, it is exceptionally well captured. Good composition with the old building in the fine green setting, and the reflection is a very good bonus to have. Well done.

This is just beautiful, Philippe - the scene has a sense of serenity that is very reminescent of the great landscape painters. I tried a crop to take out the smaller building on the left but it ruined the whole perspective of your shot.

This photo is pleasantness. The still waters, the soft lighting, the trees and architecture. It all comes together perfectly in your composition. The water moves the eye through the photo into the distance. The trees frame and the building seems almost natural there as if not man made but just rock rising in the form of a house. Good work, Philippe.

Merci Philippe !

Absolutly beautiful. The light on the green bushes is fantastic even more so with the reflections in the water. I like those trees with hanging branches seen here slightly left of the center. Wonderful house is another fine peace in your composition. All the different level and terrasses are quite nice. Your note is very interesting and educating. Excellent shot, I like it very much.
