The arenas of Nimes are the Roman amphitheater best preserved in the world, classified under the historic buildings since 1840.
The 133 meters length oval architecture, 101 meters of width, 21 meters height, was built at the end of the first century after Jesus-Christ.

The arenas were used as refuge at the time of the great invasions, then of district of dwelling, with streets and shops during the Middle Ages.
Its arena reconversion for bullfight goes back to 1863.

In its bullfighter's costume, CHRISTIAN MONTCOUQUIOL, said “Nimeño II”, is honoured by a statue in front of the arenas of Nîmes.

The bullfighter's costume of the matador, decorated with gilded or black embroideries, weighs 10 kilograms and included:
_Une jacket: the chaquetilla.
_Un waistcoat: the chaleco.
_Une seasons: the taleguilla.
_Une white blouse with jabot: the camisa.
_Une silk tie of bright color: the pañoleta.
_Une broad belt: the faja, out of silk of the same color as the pañoleta.
_Deux pairs of bottom superimposed: mediae, the first out of white cotton, the pink silk second of color.
_Des light shoes, zapatillas.
_Une hat in astrakhan, the montera.
_Un small chignon false, the coleta.
_Une hoods pageantry, the hood of paseo.

_CHRISTIAN MONTCOUQUIOL says “Nimeño II”, famous French matador, figure of the French bullfighting, born on March 10th, 1954 in Germany, and dead on November 25th, 1991 in Caveirac in the department of Gard. September 10th, 1989, in Arles, violently abused and projected in the air by bulls of Miura, it breaks the cervical vertebrae while falling down. Remained quadriplegic, there could not supported to be decreased and committed suicide on November 25th, 1991.

NÎMES is a french commune, located in the department of the Gard of the Languedoc-Roussillon area, populated of 133424 Nîmois in 1999, distributed out of 161 km², that is to say 827 hab./km².
