Overlooking Limburg, a photo from Hessen, West

Photographer's Note

The town of Limburg (officially Limburg an der Lahn) lies in western Hesse between the Taunus and the Westerwald on the river Lahn.

The town lies roughly centrally in a basin within the Rhenish Slate Mountains which is surrounded by the low ranges of the Taunus and Westerwald and called the Limburg Basin (Limburger Becken). Owing to the favourable soil and climate, the Limburg Basin stands as one of Hesses most bountiful agricultural regions and moreover, with its convenient Lahn crossing, it has had great importance to transport since the Middle Ages. Within the basin, the Lahns otherwise rather narrow lower valley broadens out noticeably, making Limburgs mean elevation only 117 m above sea level.

The derivation of the name Limburg is not quite clear and may well hearken back to a castle built here (Burg means castle in German). In 910 the town was first mentioned as Lintpurc. Two of the popular theories are:

The name was chosen because of the closeness to the Linterer Bach, a former brook in Linter that has now run dry and that emptied into the Lahn at the Domfelsen (crag). Linda is the Gaulish word for water.

Rather unlikely but very popular is the connection to a dragon saga (see Lindworm) and the connection with the monastery of Saint George the Dragon Slayer founded in Limburg. However, the monastery was built after the castle and founded around the time of the first written mention of the name.

Un cadrage serré lié ŕ une végétation débordante ;o)
Malgré le fort contraste entre ombre et lumičre, le sujet est néanmoins bien présenté et la vue profonde.

Trčs belle percée ŕ travers ces feuillages ouvrant sur la vallée et sur la petite église au clocher pointu. Notre regard s'étend jusqu'ŕ l'horizon oů l'on distingue un autre pays.
Une photo de 1991 qui n'a rien perdu de sa beauté.

Only a small detail of this beautiful town but it shows a lot concerning archticture and landscape here. Also this look through the leaves, this natural frame, is intriguing and like especially the wonderfull warm light in this scenery.
