Photographer's Note
There is a street tunnel at Altenahr which reduces the distance from its eastern end to the village from 3 km to 100 m - it was the first street tunnel of all Prussia.
3 km for a river in hilly terrain means some height difference, so Ahr river flows much deeper here than at the western entrance. In the flood night, the tunnel was filled with water almost to its top! The water destroyed the street ramp including a 180 degree turnpike completely, leaving an abyss of 6-8 m, and the village's sewage plant was also taken out.
As you can see, the planum has been reconstructed, but access is only allowed for construction vehicles. The new sewage plant is of a provisory type from German Red Cross, ready for airlift in overseas emergencies, now in homeland use.
