Photographer's Note

The pretty town of BACHARACH on a bend of the river Rhein is one of Germany's most celebrated beauty spots, and rightly so.

The Romantic Rhine valley is particularly beautiful here, with plenty of castles, vineyards and medieval towns. The Rheine valley is also a busy transportation hub, though, with highways, ships and railroad connections along the river.

Bacharach is also known for the (ruined) Werner Chapel, which you spot slightly in the shade here on the right. It's connected to an old tale of a youth called Werner who was nastily murdered, probably by a local pederast. In tune with local sentiments, though, the villagers blamed the Jews, which lead to yet another progrom. A sad tale, whichever way you look at it.

THIS VIEW was shot from a short walk up among the vineyards, capturing the village in late afternoon light. Bacharach was the first place we spent the night on our German trip this summer.

A fine place to start it surely was!
