Photographer's Note
These are basalt columns photographed in the German low mountain range Westerwald, about 30 kilometres south of my city, Siegen. Highest mountain of Westerwald is Fuchskaute, 656 metres - not far away from here. The Devonian basement here in the northern part of the Westerwald - about 800 km˛ - is overlaid by volcanic stones, such as basalt and tuff. The volcanic activity here took place about 20 million years ago and the lava must have cooled down very slowly because this is the precondition for the generation of basalt columns. Please look also here.
In the surroundings of the small town Bad Marienberg there are several outcrops (quarries, river valleys or gorges) where one can see the column structure of the basalt very well. Basalt in former times was used in unimaginable quantities especially for the construction of streets and canals. For these purposes entire mountains were carried off.
In the workshop you can see two other pictures of basalt rocks taken around Bad Marienberg.

Guten Morgen Frank,
Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Hi Frank.
Good illustration to excellent note. Perfect choice of view angle allowing light to paint very well structure of rocks.
Colours and sharpness, depth of field perfect, no tilt either ;-).
Warmer, little snow in southern Ontario.
Chris
Warm greetings to you and your nice neighbours.

Hello,

Bewunderung! alain
