SPEYER(known as Spire in French and Spiers in Duch) is a historical city in Rhineland-Palatinate, located on the left bank of the river Rhine.

Founded by the Romans, it is one of Germany's oldest cities. Speyer Cathedral, a number of other churches and the Altpörtel (old gate) dominate the cityscape. In the cathedral, beneath the high altar, are the tombs of eight Holy Roman Emperors and German kings.

Along our route from Bacharach to Heidelberg, there were several great and historically interesting cities we wanted to stop. Too many to stop at them all, but we're glad we did stop here.

THIS PICTURE is a view on the Maximillianstrasse leading up to the famous Speyer Dom. Roughly halfway between the famed gate tower and the Dom is this slightly larger than life statue of a pilgrim. Speyer (or Spiers) was (or is) a famous stop on the pilgrimage to Santiago.
