Photographer's Note

This condensed perspective from Ahr valley shows some interesting details:

Two world champions in their respective spheres:
Apollinaris, the Queen of Table Waters, perspectively and to some extent physically below the bridge.
Haribo, leading producer of gummy bears, with its brand new factory inside the grey bar on the horizon.

Third: the close combination of ugly looking infrastructure, in this case of A 61 autobahn from Venlo / NL to Hockenheim, and a 380 kV high-tension power line parallel to it.
Public distribution of high voltage is generally done by alternating current (AC). A growing problem in Germany and Europe lies in the great amount of electric energy from windmills which is produced in the northern parts and the demand for energy in southern parts. This requires new lines, and some of them will be designed as high voltage direct current (DC) transmission systems.
A new line from North Sea via Northrhine-Westphalia to Baden-Württemberg will be realized by hanging new cables with different insulators on the masts visible here.
