Old Venetian Harbour of Rethymno

The Old Venetian harbour of Rethymno dates back to the 13th century where it was used as a trade port by the Venetians and later by the Turks. At the end of the mole stands the imposing lighthouse. This is not Venetian, however, as it was built by the Turks after the 17th century.

Many tavernas , the fishing boats rocking on the water and the Venetian buildings create a picturesque whole.

The Venetian harbour is the ideal starting-point for a tour of the old town or a visit to the Fortezza, the Venetian fortress of Rethymnon.

In background the Egyptian Lighthouse and the highest peak of Crete.

Hello Piotr, an interesting picture with the fishing boats filling the foreground.
The red life belts and the yellow fishing nets are good complements to the blue boat.
There are some lovely details in the composition.
Excellent depth of field.

Hi Piotr,in fact the style of the houses is somewhat reminiscent of Venice, but many centuries have passed and other populations too, so much has been contaminated. The two closest boats have together the colours of the Greek national flag.

Hello Piotr,
You did well to include the yellow net in the foreground, next to the blue boat. Looking straight across the water the third great focal point is the lighthouse. And looking right we see some nice buildings and closer to us the bright red lifebuoys. There are interesting details all over this photo, and it's very well exposed.

The blue boat and yellow net are in fine contrast to the old port scenery.
Superbly alloccated the picture space with the ancient light-tower leading the view towards the town houses across the bay.

Rethymno looks almost as nice as Chania from this angle. My bus went through this town bit I did not get off there. Good color and sharpness with the yellow fishing net contrasting well with the blue sky and water. Tfs!

Az mi wstyd ze nie odwiedzilem tego uroczego miasteczka. Postawilem na Chanie a i tak mialem niedosyt. PO prostu musze tam kiedys jeszcze wrocic!
Bardzo fajna kompozycja ze stylowymi lodziami na pierwszym planie. Rowniez to klebowisko zoltych siecie ciekawie sie prezentuje.
