Photographer's Note

In 1499 the first fortification in Rion was made by Bayazid II, smaler in area with a double cirquit and moat.In 1532 it was taken by the Spaniards and Andrea Doria and retaken by the Turks.In 1603 the Knights of Malta wrought significant destruction.In 1687 it was taken by Morozini.Drastic repairs were made and it received the form it has today.New towers-bastions, strengthened ramparts.The fortress was siezed by the Turks in 1715 and in 1828 after a siege the Turks surender it to general Maison.It was repaired and handed over to Greeks.
For sometime it was used as a prison.
Today at last it belongs to Ministry of cultur and it is under restoration.

Ο συνδυασμός Νίκου και Πάτρας ξαναχτυπά(ifanik). Εξαιρετική σύνθεση και πάλι, με απαλά χρώματα και έντονο κοντραστ που δημιουργούν μια εντυπωσιακή ατμόσφαιρα. Ο πετρότοιχος αριστερά δείχνει σαν να ξεπηδά εμπρός από την υπόλοιπη φωτογραφία. Μπράβο.

Hello Nikos,

For a minute I thought I was looking at the harbor in Rhodes. Then I read your note to find that there is another and just as beautiful an ancient port as that in Rhodes. Thanks for sharing the photo, and for the informative note. Bayazid II, son of "Mehmet the Conqueror" was not terribly bright. In 1503 Leonardo da Vinci wrote to him, asking for a job as a military engineer. He offered to build a bridge over the golden horn (241 meters across). It would have been the most beautiful bridge ever conceived. The Sultan and his own military engineers dismissed the idea. The bridge was built 500 years later in Ĺs, Norway. Your photograph is superb. The sky, the colors, the composition, the resolution...

This is a very clever blend of old and new. The dramatic sky gives this an almost threatening mood and lends the picture an almost surreal aspect. An intriguing picture that really holds the viewer's attention!

Nikos, as in the yellow bridge and the storm, in this case the weather helps a lot about the atmosphere and contrast. In this case it is the light over the castle and the heavy clouds in the backgrounds. Great pic!
