The town of Portolago (now Lakki) in the Greek Dodecanese island of Leros represents some of the most interesting urban planning from the fascist regime in the Dodecanese; an extraordinary example of city takeover in the International Style known as Italian Rationalist. The symbolism of the shapes is reflected with exemplary effectiveness in the buildings of Lakki:
the administration building [the ochre building on the left- its ground floor hosts shops now],

the metaphysical tower of the market [its top seen in the middle of the frame],

the cinema-theatre [the building with the curvy facade and two pillars at the entrance-frequently used for cinema projections, thetrical performances and other cultural events],

the Hotel Roma (now Hotel Leros) [its box-like corner side seen on the left of the cinema-theatre; it's under restoration for many years now],

the church of San Francisco [now St. Nicolas orthodox church- not seen here] and

the hospital [not seen here]
are fine examples of the style. Many of its ideas and ideals were formalized by the 1928 Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne.
