Closer view of Elonas Monastery, a photo from Arkadia, Peloponnesus

Photographer's Note

Using the maximum characteristics of my lens Sigma 70-300mm,brought closer the constructions of the Monastery of Elonas from a distance of 800m about,as you see at the photo.

The Monastery of Elonas looks like as to be placed in a cradle created in the rocks of the Mt.Parnonas.
It is found in the Eastern sides of the Mt. Parnonas (between the city of Leonidio and Kosma's village).
The big treasure of the monastery is the picture of Virgin Mary, work of Luke the Evangelist.According to the legend, was found in a cave in the point that was built a few later(at 16th century)the Monastery.

Hi Danos,

Excellent use of the weather conditions and lighting. The white walls of the monastery looks really great against the dark mountainside. I love the mood. The composition might be the classic one, but still excellent. TFS and have a fine weekend!

incridible place to build a monastery and I had seen other this way in photos from greece. fabulous image, excellent light, framing and details. I can imagine how it was dificult for invaders to reach the monks in this place, I can bet they though twice to do the job.

Hi Danos, The setting of this monastery is indeed fantastic. How it is possible to go there? you have a powerful lens when you can make such a photo from 800 m distance. Excellent shot. According to legend, our Black Madonna was also painted by Luke Evangelist.

A nice warm cold color contrast between the blue grey sky and the reddish yellow cliffs. The Elonas Monastery is amazingly located half way up the cliff. Good sharpness & the poplar trees add graphism. A nice diffused light that has allowed maximum shadow detail. Tfs!

This is a lovely picture of the white monastery cradled in the cove of a steep cliff !
Great composition with the golden cliff on the left and the sky on the right reflecting some the colours of the crag.
There is some similarity between the monasteries in Greece and the ones in China, very often built on vertiginous cliff sides.

Great contrast and darkness here, with a foreboding sky adding to the drama of the cliffside building itself. I might have cropped a bit closer on the right to cut out that corner of cloud in the upper corner, which I find slightly distracting from the overall excellent image.

This is a great shot. I really like the contrast of the colour of the sky and the copper tones of the cliff. I like the way the cliff face cuts across the image from top to bottom like a torn piece of paper.

A magnificient shot, the quality is still superb, even though taken from a distant point. I think the monks must keep the treasure well in safe and sound place.

I only guess, the tourists are not allowed to enter the monastery...

So much drama in here! Sharp and steepy rock formation against cloudy sky are the things you see at the first glance. And then you notice the monastery which white color makes it look so peaceful and tranquil.
Great contrast and pleasing colors.

Hello Danos,

the buildings are built into the cliff like an eagle's nest. A sky with dark clouds conjures a dramatic, somehow unreal atmosphere.

An image with a gloomy but powerful charisma!
