Photographer's Note

Yet another photo rom the lagoon of Messologgi. Here, is a traditional lagoon boat ("gaita", see also the photo "Prows" for more information) with a typical lagoon fishing gear: "Stafnokari" (in greek: Σταφνοκάρι).

In order to fish with this gear the big pole is lowered so that the horizontal net is put onto the lagoon bed (in the Med, the lagoon bottoms are as a rule shallow, here in Messologgi the depth of the lagoon is not even a metre on average). From the pole and over the center of the net some smelly, tasty bait is put in order to attract fish. As soon as the fisherman judges that enough fish are gathered over the net, it is levered out of the sea.

There is also a variety of this fishing technique that instead of putting bait includes puting a female mullet when it is the reproductive period of this species -so that (guess what!) all the catch is male mullets!!!!
