Paraportiani Orthodox Church, a photo from Kyklades, South Aegean

Photographer's Note

Panagia Paraportiani Orthodox Church can be found just behind Little Venice, on the Aegean Island of Mykonos. There are actually 5 small churches wedged together here, 4 above ground and one below. It dates from the 1400's. "At the center is the church of Agios Efstathios, surrounded by the churches of Agia Anastasia, Agios Anargyros (the first one to be built, in the late 1300s) and Agios Sozon, and with the Church of the Virgin Mary standing out at the top with a dome." I didn't spot Peter the Pelican who frequents this area, but we do have many pelicans in Australia, so I wasn't especially gutted.

Interesting reading about four churchs in one place and one bellow ground, not seen on this photo, anyaway. Good choice of the POV with people on the paved trail.
Notable strong contrast from the white painted walls of the old church against the sky.

Hello Chris,
You had a very intense and somewhat difficult light, which could have spoiled the photo, but it looks surprisingly good. The white areas catching the sun are really white and the other colours have turned out well. The people certainly animate the view.

What a splendid photograph!
You have shown us the design and size of the white exterior of the church and animated it with a group of colourfully dressed figures.

Hello Chris,
I really like the play of shadows around the white walls and their textures. The blue sky is the perfect background as well. The people enliven the view and the white bit in the foreground almost looks like some snow.

Hello Chris,
In 2006 I saw four pelicans in the harbour of Mykonos. I'm not sure if Peter was one of them. The best places to see them were at the doors of the restaurants :)
I do like the Cycladic architecture that is shown here very nicely and from a good angle.

Mykonos was an island that we deliberately by-passed.

I love the bright, clean white of the buildings with the perfect blue sky background.

what a beautiful picture. THe church certainly is quite extraordinary. Maybe not beautiful but unique and photogenic. The light was amazing and the scene looks great. I am actually glad to see that, I have seen some pictures from the island but don't remember seeing something with so much character like this church here.
