Photographer's Note

About 60 km east of my hometown, Ierapetra, Crete, in the southern coast, there is one of the last "undiscovered" places of the beautiful island. To reach there you have to take the road from Ierapetra to Sitia, then about halfway you have to turn right, and pass through the Ziros Plateau, where you can find some beautiful traditional villages, untouched by tourism and also very important Byzantine and Venetian monuments. Then you start going down through a narrow road, full of twists and turns and suddenly you come up with the view of this "wild" Cretan landscape. The last time I was there, about 8 years ago, there were only a couple of houses and one incredible tavern with traditional Cretan cuisine. Nowadays the houses are much more, the taverns about 4 or 5, "rooms to rent" open one after the other, but still it is one of last refuges in Crete if you are looking for quite vacations. The place might look a bit inhospitable, but you 'll be surpised when you see the 3 beautiful beaches, the crystal clear waters, the small lake (ideal for healing mud-baths) and of course the hospitality of the locals, who will offer you the best Cretan food and of course Raki, the strong drink of the island. If you take a dirtroad to the north east you will reach to the very important archeological site of Zakros, a beautiful palace of the Minoan era.

IN WS YOU CAN HAVE A CLOSER LOOK TO ONE OF XIROCAMPOS' BEACHES.
