Photographer's Note

The new pedestrian/biker's bridge of Szolnok, my town, is a curious bridge with a curious name. (When clicking on the map function you will not see the bridge but its place since it is too fresh compared with the satellite photos.) The name refers to an insect (look at the shape of the construction: isn't it like a slender insect with two wings?) very popular among poets since its lifespan is as short as only three hours. It is a poetic name but I am in doubt wether it is really a good omen for a construction intended to stand for hundreds of years. But thanks to its "wings" it seems to be definitely more stable than the Calatrava Bridge in Venice or Millenium Bridge in London - OK, the environment is harsher here as well, look at the high piers.
A short comparison with the above mentioned famous pedestrian bridges:
length: Venice: 94m, London: 330m, Szolnok: 445m (186m of which above the river)
costs: Venice: somewhere between €6.5m and €10m, London: about €26m (after reinforcement), Szolnok: €7.4m
year of completion: Venice: 2008, London: 2002, Szolnok: 2011 - each of them with significant delay.
In case of Szolnok the delay was due mainly to the unusually cold winter of 2009/2010 and then to the long lasting flood in the spring. The bridge structure was made in Budapest and in lack of time it was also assembled there which made the 390-ton steel structure incapable of being transported on the road. Therefore the whole structure was put on two barges that transported it first down to Titel/Serbia and then upstream on the Tisza back to Szolnok; this meant a total route of 500 river kilometers, while the distance Szolnok-Budapest by road is exactly 100 km.

Well, this was my long chattering about a not so long bridge but more important that the people of Szolnok seem to like their new bridge. (I plagiarize the invention of my old fellow who had to produce a lengthy report in the name of his boss and was sure that nobody would read it throughout and therefore placed a sentence between the serious statements: those who were able to read my work till this point are invited for a beer at my expense.)
