Basalt columns at Reynisfjara beach on the southern coast of Iceland.
Such columns form when a large layer of lava cools slowly. Lava is free to shrink in the vertical dimension without fracturing. But horizontal shrinkage causes cracks leading to formation of columns. These structures are predominantly hexagonal in cross-section. Finally erosion caused by waves brings these columns visible on the coast.
