Photographer's Note
After long days in the wild landscapes of Iceland, we are back to "civilization" for a few hours as we are visiting the pleasant town of Akureyri. This town has about 18,000 people and is the second urban area in Iceland (following Reykjavik). It is the main economical centre in the north of Iceland. Fishing is the most important activity (two of the biggest icelandic fishing companies have their headquarters in Akureyri), but services, higher education and tourism form a growing part of the economy.
I took this photo on the quays of the port, very close to the centre of the city. It is probably a fishing boat, or maybe a whale watching boat. In the background you can see one of the many cruising boats that halt in Akureyri to visit the incredible touristic sites of the north of Iceland. You can also see the mountains (with the last snow tracks) that surround the Eyjafjörđur fjord where Akureyri lies.
