Glaumbaer, a photo from Skagafjordharsysla, Nordhurland Vestra

One more rainbow in Skagafjörđur ! This one is over Glaumbaer form, a traditional farm from 18th and 19th centuries. The farm is made with many buildings : a kitchen, bedrooms, pantries, a living room (Bađstofa in icelandic), a creamery, warehouses, a foundry, etc... The most used buildings (kitchen, rooms, living room and pantries for example) are linked by a long central corridor. The Glaumbaer farm one is 22 metres long ! The buildings are made of wood but they are covered with a thick layer of turf. The grass that grows on the roof is waterproof and can last 100 years, provided that it is correctly inclined so that the rain flows on it. The buildings are partially buried and have small windows for better isolation. This kind of farm was the traditional one in Iceland to early 20th century. Some of the buildings in Glaumbaer were occupied until 1947. Today the farm hosts a museum about rural life in Iceland. There are such farms in other places in Iceland, but the Glaumbaer is the oldest and the best preserved one.

C'est un remarquable témoignage d'architecture rurale . La prise de vue est une fois de plus excellente , avec en prime le beau ciel et le petit arc en ciel .

Trčs originales, ces maisons semi-enterrées aux toits couverts d'herbe ! En plus, tu as pu bénéficier d'un arc-en-ciel qui apporte un point d'intéręt supplémentaire ŕ cette belle photo.

Hello Olivier,

This is so interesting.
I love the idea that houses have grass roofs which have such longevity. The whole idea of this farm is so environmentally friendly.
It is a beautifully sharp photograph, nicely angled and with a rainbow for added interest.

Salut Olivier. Your photos from Iceland have been most instructive and many are visually stunning. Amazing farm and its architecture. I am sure that people were healthier living in such houses than in modern house full of synthetic materials and chemical fumes. We are getting more and more children suffering from asthma and skin disorders. Love the distant vastness. Best wishes. Klaudio.

beautiful photo... the rainbow with background of snow clad mountains... and shaded grassroof houses is simply mind blowing.

Excellent narratives accompanying this shot, Love the way the old farm buildings become part of nature! and the eye popping rainbows complements the subject really well pulling the viewer into the great dof. There's a sense of seclusion too with interesting background detail to complete the shot. Seems strange to wonder about the overgrown, It's very nice idea and well worthwhile shot so well exposed and superb bit of processing. Great capture into local culture and tradition, TFS

Etonnantes ces habitations aux toits si particuliers recouverts de végétation. Ca ne doit pas ętre bien évident de passer la tondeuse lŕ-dessus ! Excellent cadrage de biais et joli point de vue sur les montagnes enneigées de l'arričre-plan. La présence de l'arc-en-ciel est bien sűr un plus.
