Photographer's Note

Mitchell Henry built the Neo-Gothic Church as a memorial to his wife who died tragically in Egypt in 1874. The Church was constructed between 1877 and 1881 by J. F. Fuller (who had earlier constructed the Castle). He incorporated many elements from the great English medieval cathedrals and the Church is an accurate replica of Norwich Cathedral.
Over the decades, the Church suffered under the damp Connemara weather conditions and fell into disrepair. To preserve this unique historical heritage, the Nuns undertook intensive restoration and conservation works commencing in 1992.
