Scala Regia

The Scala Regia was built on a design by Vignola starting from 1560; it is accessed from the left of the Sala della Guardia.
It is located on the north-east side of the building and rises from the basement to the top floor.
The staircase is in peperino, a typical material of volcanic origin from the Viterbo area, is equipped with a sturdy balustrade parapet and has thirty Doric columns with Farnese lilies chasing each other above the capitals.
It is one of the most interesting and spectacular architectural elements of the entire building and certainly the place where Vignola characterized his expressive inspiration.
