Photographer's Note

When I told a friend I was going to Italy, he said grrreat, where to? When I said Genoa, he frowned and asked... why Genoa? The city still has a bit of an unfriendly ugly harbor-town reputation, but recently it seems to have rediscovered its rich history and beauty.

One of the main attractions of Genoa is the Via Garibaldi with its colourful Renaissance palaces. In the days these were built, Genoa was a wealthy and powerful city-state, with its own coinage and its own navy, dominating the Mediterranean sea trade.

The Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Doria Tursi have been turned into museums, offering a lovely mix of the displayed art and the architecture of the buildings. But other palazzi, like this bluefaced Palazzo Nicolosio Lomellino are usually open to stroll in too, and are definitely worth that quick peek inside.
