Family: Nymphalidae

Subfamily: Satyrinae

Front wing length mm. 20 - 25 mm.

Description: this beautiful species has a brown color, paler in the females, with large ocellated spots. The Mera flies preferably in the rocky escarpments from the plain up to 1800 m of altitude.

Male: front wings with extensive dark brown haze that more or less completely covers the wing, leaving a series of orange post-discal spots uncovered. Blackish androconial spot that crosses the wing and a large black ocellated spot, almost always double and pupillated with white., In the apical area. Hindquarters totally darkened of greyish brown with some black postdiscal spots pupillated with white and surrounded by orange.

Female: similar to the male but larger, devoid of androconium, with less extensive anterior veiling and a continuous orange post-discal band, tending to yellowish in the apical portion.

Reverse: front wings similar to the obverse but with greyish apexes, lighter and less extended designs. Hindquarters of gray color with subtle dark transverse designs. Complete series of postdiscal black ocellated spots pupillated with white and doubly bordered with greyish and brown.

Distribution: all of Italy excluding Sardinia and Elba

Habitat: meadows, forest edges and uncovered slopes from the basal to the mountain and cacuminal level, up to about 2000 meters above sea level.

Annual generations: two with flickering May-June and August-September.

Nurse plants: Poa annua, Hondeum murinum, Glyceria fluitane, Festuca sp., Lolium sp.

Hello Silvio,
Today's second butterfly on TE. This one has a fantastic pattern looking like it was designed by a modernist artist. From this angle we get a perfect view of one wing. The purple flowers provide a great contrast to the butterfly and the green background. You used the shallow depth perfectly.

You and Luciano seem able to see the most beautiful butterflies, perched contentedly feeding!
This one is perfectly sharp, standing out clearly against the oof b/g.

I listed to a report on TV, this morning, about the sad plight of butterflies in the U.K. and how many of them are on the endangered list! I have seen very few in my garden, this year, and, mostly, they re cabbage whites.

This is lovely. The patterns on the wings are quite striking and the contrasting flower is beautiful.
I heard today on the news that some butterflies are declining in numbers, intensive farming and overuse of insecticides the main problem.

Another 'Beauties' in your wonderful butterfly-photo-collections.
You must be so proud of yourself for producing such an amazing picture ... like this one again.
I do love the 'love' shapes of the wings. Each wing has its own distinctiveness with beautiful patterns and soft colours.
I wish I've the patience ... like you , waiting for a butterfly to settle on a flower :-)
