Photographer's Note

Opening up toward the Adriatic Sea, the central and main square of Trieste, Piazza dell'Unitŕ d'Italia [Unity of Italy Square], was a complete and pleasant surprise to me the first time I saw it. I didn't think I'd find anything like this in a city I thought to be a dreary seaport.

Instead I was met by this large square surrounded on three sides by beautiful white buildings in baroque and neo-classical styles - all illuminated in a very tasteful way. And on the fourth side: the Golf of Trieste - the Sea - the Mediterranean Sea!

Far back is Palazzo del Municipio [Town Hall] flanked to the left by Palazzo Modello together with Casa Stratti and to the right by Palazzo Pitteri and Grand Hotel Duchi d'Aosta. This is also where Caffč degli Specchi (Café of Mirrors) and Harry's Restaurant & Café are situated; the places to be and to be seen in Trieste.

Closest to the camera are Palazzo del Governo (left) and Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino (right), originally Lloyd Austriaco shipping company, as Trieste was the seaport of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire until 1919. Today it houses the regional government - not to be confused with the "la prefettura" across the square.

Italy might be united today, but it has to be governed in so many levels.
