VentotenernIsland in the Tyrrhenian Sea, volcanic origins, and is geographically part of the Pontine Archipelago, while geologically is part of the Phlegrean islands, together with Ischia, Procida and Vivara.rnIt is located off the coast on the border between Lazio and Campania, it has an elongated shape, measuring about 1.9 kilometers with a maximum altitude of 139 meters. The Santo Stefano Island is located about two kilometers to the east, while the island of Ponza is 40 kilometers north-west.rnThe climate of the island of Ventotene is very mild, subtropical, characterized by very mild and rainy winters with low daily temperature swings, and hot summers but ventilated.rnOnce known by the Greeks Pandataria or Pandaria, the island later became a Roman colony where they were confined for several reasons members of the imperial family. First Augustus exiled his daughter Julia (Julia villa remains at Punta Eolo), then the Emperor Tiberius exiled his niece Agrippina in 29 A.D. and later Emperor Nero exiled his wife Octavia, after having repudiated.rnFrom Roman times Ventotene were several ruins of villas and aqueducts, the ancient harbor and fish ponds modeled in the volcanic tuff rocks.rnDuring the Fascist period, namely from 1941 to 1943, on the island were confined many antifascists of all tendencies, as well as people considered you do not like the regime. Among others Sandro Pertini, Luigi Longo, Umberto Terracini, Peter Secchia, Eugenio Colorni, Altiero Spinelli, Ernesto Rossi. It was these last two anti-fascists to write on the island, in the spring of 1941, an important document for a free and united. Draft Manifesto became known as the Manifesto of Ventotene. In the document, the federation of European states, on the US model, is listed as the only solution for the salvation of European civilization: from then on the 'United States of Europe' cease to be an object of philosophical or cultural interest but become concrete political goal.r
