Madonna of Belfiore

Polychrome wooden sculpture, dating back to around 1310, is the work of a Spoleto painter and carver, conventionally called Maestro di San Ponziano.
It comes from the parish church of San Niccolň in Belfiore di Foligno, in all likelihood it is what remains of a monumental tabernacle, already exposed on the main altar, with two doors on either side with painted scenes from the life of Christ or the Virgin, as usual in 14th century Umbria, especially in the Spoleto area. It is described in the inventory of the church written by Angelo Bolognini in 1727, placed in the last altar on the left, Relief image, called Madonna del Rosario, which is carried in procession by the prior every first Sunday of the month, post vesperos, of various colors very gallant and about 3 and a half palms high ".
In 1911 it was still on display in the church, Michele Faloci Pulignani sees it in a niche on the back wall immediately to the left of the entrance.
In 1940 he was in the sacristy of the parish church of Belfiore, where Guido Boccolini sees it, who later dedicated a small monograph to sculpture.
In 1947, it was sold and after a few steps it ended up in the Buratti collection in Milan. In 2006 it was bought back by the Superintendency for the Historical, Artistic and Ethno-anthropological Heritage of Umbria, restored and exhibited in the Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto, where it is still allocated.
The splendid Madonna and Child is seated on a throne, on whose back a decorated cloth is painted. The Child is seated, slightly moved to the left, on the mother's knees who supports him with his left hand, while with the other he goes to touch the right of Jesus, who with his left holds a red booklet.
Mary's cloak and the child's robe, already silver-spotted, now oxidized, appear brown in color, but the polychrome is well preserved.
The pose is not frontal and rigid, as in most sculptures of the period, but as soon as it is moved, Maria's head is slightly reclined and her right knee is slightly higher than the other.

You have written a fascinating and comprehensive note about this sculpture and also presented a photograph of stunning quality.

I am amazed also at the quality of the restoration which this sculpture has undergone - its condition appears pristine despite the fact that it is seven hundred years old. You have managed to capture this magnificent work superbly well with lovely rich colours and amazing details and sharpness.

Another stunningly beautiful medieval sculpture. This time the beauty is enhanced by the colours and the fine details of the throne. I presume great care was taken during restoration to return it to its original appearance. The photo is perfectly sharp and clear and you handled the light well.

Silvio, that splendid Madonna and child sculpture was carved in polychrome wood. The personage is seated on a decorated throne, she holds the baby on her knees. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.
