Church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo - Spoleto
The small church stands in the alley of the same name, in the area of the ancient Vaita Filittčria, the Byzantine district of medieval Spoleto. It was consecrated in 1174 and became one of the parish churches of the city; for its construction were used tanned stones and material from the Roman era. Recent excavations have shown that its current crypt was a real, pre-existing church, built in turn over an ancient Roman building. The raised presbytery above the crypt was only added in the 16th century.
The exterior, with very simple lines, is embellished on the left wall by a large fresco depicting the Madonna and four Saints dated to the 13th-14th century, unfortunately very much damaged; the façade is linear, with a narrow and lunette portal, and a rose window within a square frame.
The interior has a single room with a raised presbytery and crypt, which is no longer accessible. The pictorial decoration refers to a time span between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries. Particularly noteworthy is a fresco located in the left wall representing the Martyrdom of Thomas Becket from Canterbury, datable to the first quarter of the 13th century, attributable to Alberto Sotio. It is one of the oldest examples depicting the scene of the assassination of the English bishop and refers to the dispute between the latter and the Chancellor of the kingdom of England Henry II. The story, however, can be linked to a fact of local history: the struggle between the Papacy and the Empire for the possession of the Duchy of Spoleto. The presbytery area, added in the 1500s, preserves frescoes from the same century by Pier Matteo Piergili, a local prelate and painter, including a depiction of San Francesco, "S. Nicola "," Crucifixion "of the XIV century," S. Giovanni Battista "," Madonna with saints "," S. Leonardo "," Pope Gregory the Great "and" Catherine of Alexandria "," Herod's Banquet ". A semicircular fresco instead tells the" Stories of Sts. John and Paul ". In the attic, fragmentary frescoes by the Master of the Palaces are visible ( late 13th century).
It also contained the Croce del Sotio (now moved to the Duomo) and the fresco with the stories of the SS. Giovanni e Paolo, which is now in the Duchy Museum.
