Supper at Emmaus - Collegiate Church of Santa Maria di Arrone
The attribution of this beautiful canvas, preserved in the magnificent collegiate church of Arrone, to the great Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, is causing a stir.
The presumed attribution refers to the account of the pastoral visit of Carlo Giacinto Lascaris, bishop of Spoleto, The work does not appear in the descriptions of the church of 1690, it is therefore assumed that it arrived here between 1690 and 1712, date of the visit of Lascaris. The Spoleto Bishop, who left us very useful reports of his pastoral visits, on the basis of his feelings and not on the basis of documents, attributes it to Caravaggio. The beautiful canvas depicting the Supper at Emmaus, preserved on the right wall of the collegiate church of Santa Maria di Arrone, enclosed in a rich Baroque frame, is the work of Giovanni Antonio Galli, known as Spadarino.
After all, Spadarino is among the best followers of Caravaggio, even the beautiful Narciso, a work by Spadarino preserved in the Borghese gallery in Rome, has been attributed by many critics to Caravaggio.
In the WS placed the version of the Emmaus Supper painted in Rome by Caravaggio for the Marquis Ciriaco Mattei in 1601, now preserved in the National Gallery in London, I think the difference in style can be clearly seen.
