Photographer's Note
Church of Santa Maria di Viezziu - Avendita di Cascia (PG)
Small country church, probably built as an extension of an original aedicule, takes its name from the place where it is located.
Here on the eve of August 15th, the young people of Avendita come to sleep, the next day there is Mass outdoors, outside this tiny church.
The church is located in a small clearing just over half an hour's walk from the town and can be reached via a dirt road that cuts through fields and woods.
Mass begins at 7 am.
After the religious ceremony, the faithful go to a nearby place, near a water source, where they have breakfast with sandwiches and wine.
The appearance is typical of the sixteenth-century votive building, the simple facade has a stone portal and is adorned with two side windows, through which the faithful could venerate the sacred image, protected from sweat.
Two dates are engraved on the façade, 1897 and 1976, perhaps a reminder of restorations.
The interior has a single nave with a trussed roof and tiles decorated with geometric decorations.
The left wall is now bare but traces of frescoes can be seen under the plaster.
The original aedicule is surmounted by an arch supported by columns.
The fresco, of naive workmanship but of considerable expressive effectiveness, a beautiful testimony of popular art, represents the Crucifixion, with the Madonna on the left and St. John on the right, on the sides of the wall of the niche, the symbols of the Four Evangelists, above the center the Eternal blessing.
Outside the niche, in three circles, a Bishop Saint, the Madonna among the angels, and a Saint are depicted.
On the left wall, a unique and interesting fresco depicting the Adoration of the Magi, the unknown author demonstrates that he has a good perspective and a good use of color, and still retains Gothic reminiscences.
The Madonna is enthroned with the Child, one of the three Magi is kneeling to offer his gift, the other two, standing, have an unusual feminine aspect; below right, as usual in a smaller format, the clients.

Hello Silvio,
You continue to amaze me with the many photo of the countless medieval Italian churches. This one is very simple, which suits my taste well, but we can see that hundreds of years ago there were talented painters to decorate even the smallest churches in te most remote places. The well used light enables us a very good view of the interior.
Best regards,
Gert
PS It would be easier to read the note if you edited it to remove the rnrnrn between each paragraph and started each paragraph on a new line.

great reportage from this quite damage place. The remaining fragment of decorations allow us to imagine how beautiful and colorful this place may have been in the past.

Hi Silvio,
The subject is well framed. The point of view is showing the details of the frescoes and of the altar of the church of Santa Maria di Viezziu. The light is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi Silvio.
This little church is quite a discovery, I think it is the first that I see so small, the paintings could have been very interesting judging by those of the Magi, which is very interesting, indeed two of the Kings look like Queens? quite a mystery.
Sharpness, lighting and color are very good.
Well done. I like very much.
You have a good day.
Very best regards my friend.
Luis.

Hello Silvio,
The dark wooden beams add a nice graphic element contrasting well with the lighter tones of the interior of the church. The faded frescoes are unpretentious. Good sharpness and lighting too. Tfs!
