Palazzo Farnese - La Scala
The acquisition of the fief of Caprarola from the Riario family took place in 1504, at the behest of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese the Elder, followed in 1521 by a bull of Pope Leo X de 'Medici declaring Pier Luigi Farnese, Ranuccio and all their heirs vicar general with full powers over that land and its inhabitants. Alessandro Farnese the Elder himself, later Pope Paul III, to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, assisted by Baldassare Peruzzi, who designed a pentagonal fortress with corner bastions.
The Scala Regia was built on a design by Vignola starting from 1560; it is accessed from the left of the Sala della Guardia.
It is located on the north-east side of the building and rises from the basement to the top floor.
The staircase is in peperino, a typical material of volcanic origin from the Viterbo area, is equipped with a sturdy balustrade parapet and has thirty Doric columns with Farnese lilies that chase each other above the capitals.
It is one of the most interesting and spectacular architectural elements of the entire building and certainly the place where Vignola characterized his expressive inspiration.
It is a helical "snail" staircase that winds in a helical form from the basement to the loggia of the noble floor and is dominated by a large dome in the center of which is represented the Farnese coat of arms with the six blue lilies in a gold field.
The frescoes, with grotesques, allegories and arabesques, are attributed to Antonio Tempesta.

Hello Silvio, you managed to get the perfect point of view looking directly up to the dome at the top.
There is sufficient light for much of the details to be clearly seen.

Excellent composition with good balance. There is a fine contrast between the dark spiral staircase and the bright walls and ceiling. All surfaces are beautifully decorated and you exposed this well under not so easy conditions.

This is a very impressive composition! Of course I have seen plenty of similar views but this one is taken in such an elegant interior where every inch is eleborately decorated. The pairs of columns add a great touch The perspective effect is amazing.
